Costume & Coffee Update

Writer's picture: Norma ShephardNorma Shephard

Here’s what’s been happening in my vintage world since we last communicated. We kicked off Coffee & Costume in January with winter weather swirling outside, but the small group that braved the storm had a fun time looking at some special designer pieces through the decades, including a 1939 Jeanne Lanvin couture gown. We snacked on goodies, thumbed through the recent Milli exhibit catalogue, and participated in an accessories and jewelry exchange.

Next time we’ll don gloves to examine Victorian wedding gowns, walking suits, and beaded mantles along with a few exceptional 20th century pieces. There will be some 19th century women’s magazines to peruse, and snacks (of course).

Exciting things have been happening at the Mobile Millinery Museum in the past couple of weeks. We presented our signature retrospective millinery fashion show to a group at Holy Rosary Church last week where even the priest participated in modelling. We sometimes bring a few men's hats, and Father was a great sport! We’re keeping the hats packed for a show in Aylmer on the 8th and are preparing to take our “Say yes to the wedding gown exhibit” to Newmarket on the 11th.

The big news is—drum roll please—we are accessioning 1000 vintage hats from a historic costume archive in Quebec. They have begun to arrive 100 at a time. There are some real beauties within the collection, and I am sensing that another book may be on the way 📷 and perhaps some Youtube videos.

The next Costume & Coffee Hour will be held 10:30 February 15th at Saint Matthew on the Plains Anglican church. Please call or email by the 14th to reserve your place. Ticket price ($10) goes toward the refreshments and the rental of the hall.

Hope to see you there! In the meantime, I’ll be steaming and cataloguing hats.
