Majestic Inspirations: 70 Hats for 70 Years Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell to perform ribbon-cutting for a millinery exhibit in honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
What is more emblematic of the Monarchy than hats? Well, maybe the crown jewels and Queen Elizabeth herself; but, if there's ever been an occasion to celebrate with hats, it is to commemorate Her Majesty's 70-year reign. That is why the Mobile Millinery Museum has curated a Jubilee-themed traveling millinery exhibit.
Majestic inspirations: 70 Hats for 70 Years, debuts in Burlington, ON June 2, at 2:00 in the afternoon. “Not since Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation has interest in Her Majesty been this widespread,” says curator Norma Shephard. “Due to recent events, the public now sees Elizabeth not only as the Queen of England and Head of the Commonwealth, but as a widow, relatable matriarch, and remarkable senior. And, sadly, it may not be long before she is eulogized as the embodiment of the 2nd Elizabethan era.”
The Burlington exhibit of 70 exceptional hats will share space with a collection of coronation commemoratives and a letter to Shephard from Buckingham Palace. “Some of the pieces on exhibit may have been gazed upon by the Queen herself,” notes Shephard, whose museum has received numerous hat donations over the years from women who were presented to the queen and wore special hats for the occasion. “One woman told us she didn’t buy a new hat,” says Shephard. “She didn’t see a need to because the queen hadn’t seen any of her old hats”.
Old hats are a passion of Shephard’s who founded her museum in 1999, and who already has one Jubilee exhibit under her belt. Ten years ago, the Mobile Millinery Museum mounted a similar tribute, ‘60 Hats for 60 Years’, at Paletta Mansion, but this presentation promises to be more extensive, reveals Shephard. “Following its hometown debut, we are offering Majestic Inspirations: 70 Hats for 70 Years to sites beyond Burlington.
